I often think of the most special places on earth as those being the most beautiful and the most peaceful…for me that’s my ranch and to think that I am able to call such a place home is a true blessing. When horseback, having the breeze at my back, the smell of rain, or hearing the distant roll of thunder -- I am right at home in my outside sanctuary, the place where I feel closest to God.
For fifty years the Flying W Diamond Ranch has been part of our family. Meredith and I have worked hard over the years building and running our business, often times in many parts of our state and country. It is not easy making a small business work, but this is small in comparison to making a ranch work financially. Our quest to keep this important part of our heritage and culture in our family for generations to come has required a lot of effort, sacrifice, and balance of time.
Meredith has been such a great influence for our family, keeping me grounded and our kids in line. She has been the CEO of our family, our home and our time together. She has planned wonderful experiences, from picnics at the ranch to trips abroad, building memories we all will cherish forever. Yes, Meredith has a very independent side and exudes confidence in herself and her faith. I am thankful for this. Truthfully, she has had the best influence in keeping our family faith based over the years. She’s been my wife for 31 years and my best friend.
Before Meredith, my Dad was my best friend. Unfortunately, he passed away at the young age of 68, twenty five years ago. His love for our land in Lincoln County has been an important part of my life and character. There is not one day that I do not think of that friendship. My Mom passed away almost ten years ago. She was responsible for my frugal genes. When I was young and she sent me for milk: she would give me two dimes, one nickel and two pennies – and tell me if it cost more, walk back home and get the other penny.
Meredith has wonderful parents living in Midland, Texas. Her commitment to them in their latter years takes precedence over many things in her life today. She keeps a frequent trek down Highway 380/70 between here and Midland to honor that commitment. I respect her so much for that. She manages the upkeep on a few other places for our family. She wears rubber gloves as well as she does jewelry, and she can wear cowboy boots as well as heels.
In summary, there are three things in life that are important: relationships, time, and memories. Whether with God, friends, family or those with whom relationships struggle, the desire is to have the fun memories to take home from all. As I sit here this afternoon working on this, I look out and see the sun beginning to set over the Sierra Blancas, and the dogs in front of the fire. Meredith just got home from Midland, and I am the traditional cook on Sunday nights--steak and potato. It’s time get to the grill.
