Ed Tinsley is a seasoned small business owner, restaurateur, and rancher, who is also involved in the oil and gas industry. Ed’s life experiences give him a first-hand understanding of the issues and values that are important to southern New Mexico.
Small-business Owner In the late 70’s, Ed and his wife Meredith purchased the rights to develop Schlotzsky’s Sandwich Shops for New Mexico and southern Colorado. The couple started the chain in New Mexico in 1978, with Meredith working the front register and Ed making the sandwiches in the back.
Today, Tinsley is the owner of Tinsley Hospitality Group, LLC, which is the master franchisor of K-BOB’S Steakhouses. K-BOB’S franchise operations include restaurants located in Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. Mr. Tinsley purchased K-BOB’S Steakhouses in 1991.
For his experience in the restaurant industry, Ed Tinsley was recognized as the Texas Cattle Feeders Association Beef Merchandiser of 1992, received the Silver Spoon Award for community service, was inducted into the New Mexico 4-H Hall of Fame. Ed has also been a featured participant in various restaurant and small business forums throughout the United States.
Ranching Ed and Meredith live on and operate a cattle ranch located in Capitan, New Mexico, which has been in the Tinsley family for the past fifty years. Both Ed and Meredith are active in the oil and gas industry in the southeastern part of New Mexico, Texas, and Louisiana.
Ed Tinsley, and his ranch, the Flying W Diamond Ranch Inc. of Capitan, New Mexico, are involved in an equestrian and residential community called Ranchos de Caballos LLC.
Leadership Ed Tinsley was elected as Chairman of the Board of the National Restaurant Association in 2006 for a one year term, which ended in May of 2007. During his term as an officer, Tinsley traveled extensively representing the industry in Washington D.C, throughout the United States, and abroad in China, Mexico, and Turkey. Tinsley has served continuously as a volunteer since his election in 1996 on the national board representing the state of New Mexico.
In 2005, Ed was one of two National Restaurant Association Board members selected to serve as an Air Force Hennessy Award Traveler, a duty that required spending five weeks evaluating and assisting the top military foodservice operations on US Air Force bases worldwide.
The restaurant industry is the largest private sector employer of 13.1 million people with over 945,000 locations, and annual sales in excess of $558 billion. Tinsley has provided expert testimony on behalf of the restaurant industry before the United States Congress.
Personal Information Ed Tinsley is a graduate of the University of Texas with a degree in accounting. He earned a law degree from Texas Tech in 1977 and is a current member of the State Bar in New Mexico and Texas. Following graduation, and prior to purchasing the rights to develop Schlotzsky’s Sandwich Shops in New Mexico, he pursued a brief career with a law firm.
Tinsley was appointed by President George W. Bush to serve as a Trustee on the Valles Caldera Board of Trustees in the role of financial management for the Trust, and has since been elected as Vice Chairman of the Board. He has also served on non-profit boards to include: the Carrie Tingley Children’s Hospital Foundation as its past president, and the International Braford Cattle Association.
Ed has been a loyal member of the Republican party for approximately three decades. He is an active member of the New Mexico Republican Party, both financially and substantively, serving on the State Executive Committee since 2003.
Ed and Meredith Tinsley have been married for 31 years and they have two children: Edward, who is a graduate of the University of Southern California and the London School of Economics and is currently attending Brooklyn Law School and Ede, who is a graduate of Vanderbilt University. Ed and Meredith attend and are active members of the Methodist Church in Capitan, New Mexico.
