Tinsley to Emphasize Differences With Teague |
Roswell Daily Record

After winning the 2nd Congressional District, Republican nominee Ed Tinsley stated he is humbled by his victory in the five-way primary race and is looking forward to contrasting his stances on issues from illegal immigration to the war in Iraq with his Democratic opponent Harry Teague.
Winning 12 of the district's 18 counties, Tinsley, a Capitan rancher and owner of the K-Bob's steakhouse chain, said he was honored by the support of voters, adding, "They sent a clear message."
Tinsley, who won Chaves County with more than 31 percent of the votes, attributed his success to his willingness to connect with voters in the district. "I put about 49,000 miles on my pickup in less than a six month period of time, " he said, adding that he frequently walked through neighborhoods and visited with constituents. "We worked dililgently to get out in front of the voters, and I think people appreciated the visibility."
Tinsley bested Aubrey Dunn Jr., Monty Newman, Greg Sowards and C. Earl Greer in the June 3 primary election.
Looking toward November's general election where Tinsley will face Teague, a Hobbs oilman, the Republican nominee said, "I'm enthusiastic about the opportunities to differentiate my position on different policy issues compared to (Teague's) and I relish the opportunity to participate in debates and forums throughout the 2nd Congressional District.
Tinsley said he and his opponent have distinct differences when it comes to their stances on the war in Iraq, health care, the energy crisis, and illegal immigration.
"I'm for funding the troops to make sure they have the right kinds of weapons, armor, and technology to execute their mission," he said. "I feel like the decision on when we begin withdrawal from Iraq needs to be in the hands of our military leadership in the field. That decision cannot be dictated by Teague or Gov. Bill Richardson."
Regarding health care, Tinsley said, "We need to preserve the integrity and sanctity and quality of our private health care system." He said the universal health care system supported by Richardson and numerous Democrats "would jeopardize the quality of the American health care system."
Stating that renewable energy resources such as wind, solar and nuclear are important, Tinsley added, "...but, we can't explore those at the expense of our oil and gas industry and the domestic companies that are working hard to achieve energy independence for us."
As for illegal immigration, Tinsley said the current policy is broken and a band-aid approach will not fix it. "We must start with border security," he said. "The role of our border patrol is evolving and we need to train them accordingly." He added technology and securing fences in high-traffic areas are also important in protecting the nation's borders.
Stating that he is opposed to amnesty, he added a temporary guest worker program is vital for the success of the agriculture industry.
"I understand agriculture," said Tinsley who was born and raised in a ranching community. "I live and breathe it, and I understand it fromt he pasture to the plate."
With more than five months of campaigning ahead of him before November's general election, Tinsley said he looks to continuing the approach he employed during the primary. By mid-summer, he hopes to have opened a campaign office in Roswell. "Chaves County is key," Tinsey said. "It's the heartbeat of the Republican party in this part of the state." |
