Failure in Iraq is not an option; we must succeed. A secure, democratic Iraq – at peace with its neighbors – will ultimately help stabilize a critical region and protect America’s national security interests. The surge strategy that President Bush and his top military advisers put in place January of 2007 is working, and momentum is building in Iraq. General Petraeus reports that the surge has reduced sectarian killings by more than 50 percent nationwide and by more than 80 percent in Baghdad over the past year. (http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/09/10/iraq.petraeus/index.html#cnnSTCText) New Mexico is contributing to the effort in Iraq, and we salute the soldiers and civilians, who are fighting abroad to protect America and defeat terrorism. We must never forget the friends and families of the 36 fallen soldiers from New Mexico, who so valiantly fought and made the ultimate sacrifice. And, we must never forget the 266 soldiers from New Mexico who have been wounded since the War effort began. We must continue to support the mission in Iraq by: • Properly funding and equipping our troops. Our troops deserve our monetary support, the very best military equipment and technology available, as well as our moral support. • Keeping our Senior Officers in place, as they possess the institutional knowledge, situational awareness and critical expertise necessary to prevail. • Respecting the recommendations of the top U.S. commanders in Iraq, regarding all strategic and tactical initiatives, including a timetable for future troop reductions in Iraq. • Accelerating the training and equipping of the Iraqi armed forces and police. We must hold the Iraqi government accountable for their performance. The future of Iraq ultimately lies in the hands of the Iraqi people, the Iraqi government, and the Iraqi armed forces – their strength is an essential requirement for bringing U.S. troops home from Iraq. • Supporting our troops and soldiers upon their return home, by immediately addressing health and mental issues, as well as the financial challenges facing them and their families. • Supporting the families of our deployed troops. |
