Tinsley on Immigration and Border Security
ImageBackground and Challenge
Illegal immigration is a growing problem in the United States.  As a border state, New Mexico is on the front lines of the debate over illegal immigration and border security.  Over the past decade, the number of illegal immigrants is estimated to have quadrupled from 3 million to over 12 million. This tide of illegal immigration has compromised our national security and placed additional pressure on our health and education systems.  Illegal immigration is fundamentally unfair to those legal immigrants, who play by the rules as they work to pursue the American dream.

We need comprehensive reform of our nation’s immigration system – a complete overhaul, not a band-aid approach.

Securing our borders is the critical, first step.  Many see building a border fence as the solution.  I agree that it is part of the solution in specific geographical areas. The problem is so serious that we should do whatever it takes to ensure the security of our borders.  We should consider a larger, well-trained, and better funded Border Patrol.  We should use the latest technology for enhanced surveillance and monitoring of our borders and ports.

Comprehensive immigration reform should also include:
  • Ending the practice of giving government benefits to illegal aliens;
  • Immediately putting an end to the policy of giving drivers licenses to illegal immigrants;
  • Requiring high school graduates to read and speak English proficiently before graduating from high school.

One thing is certain: no comprehensive immigration reform plan should include amnesty.
