Tinsley on Health Care
Image"I will fight hard to protect the integrity and quality of our private health care system in America.  It is critical that we do not allow a socialized or universal government-run program to undermine individual choice or damage our physicians and providers.  Health care coverage must be expanded, but this can not be done at the sole expense of small business owners.  I support methods that will provide options for broader and more affordable coverage for all individuals and families."

Background and Challenge
The facts are devastating when it comes to healthcare for Americans.

  • 45 million Americans do not have health care coverage today.
  • In 2007, only 6 out of 10 American businesses were able to offer their employees health insurance, with small businesses being the hardest hit.
  • The rate of growth of spending for health care in our country is increasing exponentially and is now 17 percent of our Gross Domestic Product.

Democrats believe that the solution to the impending health care crisis is a one-size-fits-all, government-run health care system — a course that threatens choice, competition and medical progress by restricting free markets.

Reforming our health care system must address the twin problems of high costs and the uninsured, while still maintaining a free-market approach.  Health care based on market reform will promote creativity, innovation, greater accessibility and consumer choice for families and individuals.  As such, Ed Tinsley supports:

  • The right of individuals and small businesses to purchase health savings accounts and flexible spending accounts.
  • Increasing tax incentives for employers, employees, and non-employees to purchase health care coverage.
  • Voluntary, multi-state health-insurance purchasing pools. Association Health Plans (AHPs) and Small Business Health Care plans provide an alternative to individual plans for employers and employees.
  • Fairer tax treatment of health-care costs for the self-employed.
  • Ensuring that health care coverage is more portable, so that people can more easily maintain coverage.
  • Tort reform to prevent frivolous law suits against physicians and health care providers.

In addition, Tinsley believes that we must demand greater responsibility from our health care providers by way of transparency and cost cutting.  This means pushing health care providers to:

  • Make medical information more available and more transparent so that patients can make more informed decisions with respect to the providers and treatments they choose.
  • Better manage medical liability cases in an effort to reduce health care costs across the board.
